How to Cook Ground Turkey for Dogs

Spread the love

Learning how to cook ground turkey for dogs is wonderfully simple. It can be cooked on the stovetop, baked in the oven, made into meatballs or patties, or added to homemade dog food recipes with vegetables and other dog-friendly ingredients.

Ground turkey is one of my favorite proteins to cook with because it’s easy to prepare and works in so many different recipes. You can keep things simple and cook it plain as an occasional addition to your dog’s regular food, or use it as the starting point for meatloaf, meatballs, stews and homemade meals.

The important part is keeping it plain and cooking it thoroughly. Skip the onions, garlic, salt and seasoning you’d normally reach for when cooking turkey for yourself.

Here’s how to cook ground turkey safely for your dog, along with different cooking methods, what you can mix with it and plenty of ideas for putting it to good use.

Can Dogs Eat Ground Turkey?

Yes, dogs can eat plain, fully cooked ground turkey. Turkey is a source of animal protein and provides nutrients including B vitamins, selenium, phosphorus and zinc.

What matters is how you prepare it.

Ground turkey intended for your dog should be cooked without onion, garlic, rich sauces or lots of added salt. Fatty additions such as butter and cooking oils aren’t necessary either.

If you’re buying packaged ground turkey, check the ingredient label. Plain ground turkey is what you want rather than a seasoned turkey mixture.

Ground turkey should be cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). This is the USDA’s recommended safe minimum temperature for ground poultry.

What Type of Ground Turkey Is Best for Dogs?

You’ll usually find several types of ground turkey at the grocery store, ranging from very lean ground turkey breast to mixtures containing both light and dark meat.

For most recipes, I like lean ground turkey. Something around 90–93% lean works well for homemade dog food because it cooks nicely without producing an excessive amount of rendered fat.

Extra-lean turkey can also be used, especially when you’re making a recipe where other ingredients provide some fat.

Higher-fat ground turkey isn’t necessarily unsuitable for every healthy dog, but it does make a richer meal. Dogs that need a low-fat diet for medical reasons should follow the diet recommended by their veterinarian.

And don’t confuse plain ground turkey with turkey sausage. Sausage can contain high levels of salt as well as seasonings such as onion and garlic that you don’t want in your dog’s bowl.

How to Cook Ground Turkey for Dogs on the Stove

The stovetop is the quickest and easiest method when you simply want cooked ground turkey.

What You Need

  • Ground turkey
  • Large skillet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Meat thermometer

You don’t need oil, butter, salt or seasoning.

Instructions

  1. Place the ground turkey in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Break the meat into small pieces using a wooden spoon or spatula.
  3. Continue cooking and stirring until the turkey is evenly cooked and there are no pink areas remaining.
  4. Check the thickest pieces with a meat thermometer. The ground turkey should reach at least 165°F (74°C).
  5. If your turkey has released a large amount of fat, you can drain off the excess.
  6. Allow the turkey to cool before serving it to your dog or combining it with other ingredients.

Depending on the amount you’re cooking and the size of your skillet, 1 lb (450 g) of ground turkey will usually take around 8–12 minutes to cook on the stovetop. Use temperature rather than cooking time alone to decide when it’s done.

Should I Add Water?

You don’t normally need to add water when browning ground turkey in a skillet.

If you’re using very lean turkey and find that it is sticking, you can add a small splash of water rather than cooking oil. Stir frequently and keep the heat at medium rather than turning it up too high.

Can You Boil Ground Turkey for Dogs?

Yes, although I prefer to describe this as simmering rather than boiling.

Place the ground turkey in a saucepan and add enough water to cover it. Break the meat apart and bring the water to a gentle boil before reducing it to a simmer.

Cook until the turkey is completely cooked through and reaches 165°F (74°C).

Drain the meat and allow it to cool.

This method produces very soft, finely crumbled turkey and doesn’t require any added fat, although some of the flavor and nutrients will end up in the cooking liquid.

If you want to use the cooking liquid, make sure everything that went into the pot is dog-friendly. You can cool it and skim off excess fat before using a little to moisten your dog’s food.

How to Bake Ground Turkey for Dogs

Ground turkey doesn’t have to be crumbled in a skillet. Baking works particularly well when you’re batch cooking or making meatloaf, muffins, burgers or meatballs.

For plain ground turkey, spread the meat evenly in an oven-safe baking dish, breaking it into relatively small pieces.

Bake at 375°F (190°C) until completely cooked through and the center reaches 165°F (74°C).

Cooking time will depend on how thickly the turkey is spread, so always check it with a meat thermometer rather than relying solely on a suggested cooking time.

Once cooked, break the turkey into smaller pieces and allow it to cool.

Or make things more interesting and turn it into one of our homemade turkey meatloaf, meatball or burger recipes for dogs.

Can I Cook Ground Turkey in a Slow Cooker?

Yes. Ground turkey can be used in slow cooker dog food recipes, but I prefer to brown it first when possible.

Browning allows you to break the turkey into even pieces and drain excess rendered fat before adding it to the slow cooker.

If your recipe has been specifically developed for raw ground turkey to cook along with the other ingredients, follow that recipe’s instructions and make sure the finished turkey reaches at least 165°F (74°C).

Can You Air Fry Ground Turkey for Dogs?

Loose ground turkey isn’t particularly practical in an air fryer, but the air fryer is great for turkey meatballs, patties and mini burgers.

Shape your turkey mixture and place it in the air fryer basket with enough room for air to circulate around each piece.

Cooking times will depend on the size and thickness of the meatballs or patties and the temperature used in your recipe. Check the center with a meat thermometer and don’t remove them until they have reached 165°F (74°C).

The Best Way to Cook Ground Turkey for Dogs

There isn’t one cooking method that’s best for every situation.

Cooking MethodBest ForWhy We Like It
SkilletPlain ground turkeyQuick and easy
SimmeringSoft turkey crumblesNo added fat needed
OvenBatch cookingGreat for larger quantities
Slow cookerHomemade dinnersConvenient for one-pot recipes
Air fryerMeatballs and pattiesGood for small batches

For simply adding a little turkey to your dog’s usual food, the skillet method is probably the easiest.

If you’re making a complete recipe, use whichever cooking method the recipe calls for.

Should You Drain Ground Turkey for Dogs?

It depends on the turkey you’re using.

Very lean ground turkey may produce hardly any liquid or fat, in which case there’s little reason to drain it.

A higher-fat turkey mixture may leave considerably more rendered fat in the pan. In that case, I prefer to drain the excess before using the cooked turkey in a recipe.

This can be particularly important if your dog has been advised to eat a low-fat diet. Dogs with pancreatitis or another condition requiring dietary fat restriction need more individualized dietary advice, so check with your veterinarian rather than simply swapping regular ground turkey for extra-lean turkey.

Should You Rinse Ground Turkey After Cooking?

No. There’s generally no need to rinse cooked ground turkey. If you want to reduce the amount of rendered fat, simply drain it after cooking.

And don’t rinse raw ground turkey. Washing raw poultry can splash bacteria around your sink and nearby kitchen surfaces.

Do You Season Ground Turkey for Dogs?

I keep it plain. Your dog doesn’t need salt and pepper to appreciate a bowl of freshly cooked turkey!

Avoid adding:

  • Onion or onion powder
  • Garlic or garlic powder
  • Large amounts of salt
  • Spicy seasoning
  • Seasoning mixes
  • Rich sauces and gravies
  • Butter

This is one of those occasions when boring cooking is exactly what we want.

Once the turkey is cooked, you can combine it with dog-friendly herbs or other ingredients as part of a properly formulated recipe.

What Can I Mix With Ground Turkey for My Dog?

This is where ground turkey really comes into its own. Its mild flavor works with a huge range of dog-friendly ingredients.

Some of our favorites include:

PumpkinPumpkin puree adds moisture and fiber and works particularly well in turkey meatballs and meatloaf.

Sweet potato – Cooked sweet potato makes a tasty addition to homemade turkey meals.

Carrots – Easy to cook alongside turkey and useful for adding vegetables to homemade food.

Green beans – Chop them into small pieces and cook until tender.

Broccoli – Plain cooked broccoli can be included in appropriate amounts.

Eggs – We use eggs in several turkey recipes to add protein and help bind meatballs, muffins and meatloaf.

Rice – Ground turkey and rice is a popular combination and can form part of a homemade recipe.

Quinoa – Another option for recipes that include grains or carbohydrate sources.

Cottage cheese – A little cottage cheese works particularly well with turkey in our dog breakfast recipes.

Pumpkin and cranberries – One of our favorite combinations when we’re making seasonal fall and Thanksgiving recipes.

Remember that combining turkey with a few vegetables doesn’t automatically make a meal nutritionally complete.

Is Ground Turkey and Rice Good for Dogs?

Plain cooked ground turkey and rice are both foods that many dogs can eat, but mixing the two together doesn’t automatically create a complete diet.

For an occasional meal or topper, that’s less of an issue. If you’re planning to feed homemade turkey and rice as your dog’s main food on a regular basis, the entire recipe needs to provide the nutrients your dog requires.

Homemade diets can be deficient in essential nutrients when they’re put together without proper formulation. For long-term homemade feeding, it’s worth working with your veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

Is Ground Turkey and Pumpkin Good for Dogs?

Turkey and pumpkin are a great combination for dog recipes, which is probably why you’ll find the pair cropping up quite a lot in our kitchen.

Plain pumpkin puree adds moisture and fiber, while ground turkey provides the main animal protein.

Just make sure you’re using plain pumpkin puree rather than pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugar and spices.

Try the combination in homemade turkey and pumpkin dog food, turkey pumpkin meatballs or baked turkey treats.

Can Dogs Eat Ground Turkey Every Day?

Ground turkey can be included regularly in a dog’s diet, but ground turkey by itself isn’t a complete diet.

Dogs need the right amounts and proportions of protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, essential fatty acids, vitamins and trace minerals, among other nutrients.

This is particularly important with homemade dog food. Adding turkey, rice and a selection of vegetables may produce a wholesome-looking bowl, but appearance doesn’t tell us whether a recipe meets all of a dog’s nutritional requirements.

If homemade food will make up a substantial part of your dog’s regular diet, use a recipe that has been appropriately formulated for long-term feeding or work with your veterinarian or a board-certified veterinary nutritionist.

How Much Ground Turkey Can I Give My Dog?

There’s no single amount of ground turkey that’s right for every dog.

How much your dog can have depends on their:

  • Body weight
  • Age
  • Activity level
  • Body condition
  • Overall calorie needs
  • Health
  • Other foods eaten during the day
  • Whether the turkey is a treat, topper or part of a complete meal

If plain ground turkey is being offered as an occasional extra rather than as part of a formulated diet, keep the portion relatively small so extras don’t displace too much of your dog’s normal complete food.

If you’re following one of our homemade dog food recipes, use the serving guidance provided with that particular recipe rather than measuring the turkey separately.

How to Store Cooked Ground Turkey

Once the turkey has cooled, transfer it to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator.

Cooked ground turkey can generally be refrigerated for 3–4 days.

If you’ve made a big batch, freezing individual portions is much more convenient than keeping everything in the refrigerator. Portion the cooled turkey into freezer-safe containers or bags and label them with the date.

Smaller portions are especially handy because you can defrost just what you need.

Can You Freeze Ground Turkey for Dogs?

Absolutely. Ground turkey freezes well both raw and cooked.

For cooked turkey, let it cool before dividing it into usable portions. Small freezer containers, silicone freezer trays or freezer bags all work well.

If you’re freezing a complete homemade dog food recipe containing turkey, follow the storage recommendations for that particular recipe because the other ingredients may affect how well it freezes and reheats.

FAQs

Can I cook ground turkey in olive oil for my dog?

You can cook plain ground turkey without oil, so there’s usually no reason to add it. If very lean turkey sticks to the pan, a splash of water works well.

Can dogs eat ground turkey with vegetables?

Yes, ground turkey can be combined with dog-friendly vegetables such as carrots, green beans and pumpkin. Make sure every ingredient you use is safe for dogs, and remember that meat plus vegetables doesn’t necessarily make a nutritionally complete meal.

Can puppies eat ground turkey?

Plain cooked turkey may be included in a puppy’s diet, but puppies have particularly important nutritional requirements for growth. A homemade diet for a growing puppy should be professionally formulated rather than based simply on combinations of meat, vegetables and carbohydrates.
