Are Cranberries Good For Dogs?

Yes, cranberries can be good for dogs when given in moderation. They are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber, which can support your dog’s immune system and urinary tract health. Cranberries are often used to help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs. However, it’s important to offer cranberries plain, without added sugars or harmful ingredients like raisins or artificial sweeteners, which can be toxic to dogs.

Are Sweet Potatoes Good For Dogs?

Sweet potatoes are good for dogs when served properly and in moderation. They are highly nutritious and are a great source of vitamin A, which supports eye health, immune function, and skin health. The fiber in sweet potatoes promotes healthy digestion and can help with constipation or diarrhea.

They are naturally low in fat, making them a good treat option for dogs with weight concerns. Their complex carbohydrates provide dogs with a slow-releasing energy source, helping to maintain their energy levels.

Ingredients

Just 6 simple ingredients are used to make these homemade dog treats.

Ingredients laid out on a marble surface: sweet potato puree, rice flour, cranberries, egg, and small piles of turmeric and cinnamon.
  • Sweet potato puree – we make our own sweet potato puree. Simply cook and mash sweet potatoes.
  • Cranberries – fresh, frozen or dried cranberries can be use. If using dried cranberries ensure that they are not sweetened.
  • Rice flour – a great gluten free flour for dogs. Any other dog friendly flour can be used.
  • Turmeric – great for inflammation.
  • Cinnamon – contains antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties
  • Egg – a great source of protein and helps bind the dough.

We use these dried cranberries when we cannot obtain fresh.

For a slightly longer shelf life, you can refrigerate the treats. Store them in an airtight container, and they should last for up to 2 weeks.

Freezing Dog Treats

Place the cooled treats in an airtight container or resealable freezer bags. They can be stored for up to 3 months. When ready to use, thaw the treats in the refrigerator or at room temperature before serving.

Recipe Tips

The dough should be firm but not too dry. If it’s too dry, add a bit of water. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour.

Roll the dough and cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, or simply shape the dough into small balls or patties for a quick option.

Fresh cranberries can add moisture to the dough, while dried cranberries (unsweetened) will offer a chewier texture. If using dried cranberries, soak them in warm water for 5-10 minutes before adding them to the mix to prevent dryness.
