Our dogs enjoyed this ground beef dog good and since we had purchased a few rolls of ground beef at a reasonable price, this was not an expensive dish to feed them either.

When cooking this for my dogs, they loved the smell of the beef cooking and hovered around the kitchen with hope in their eyes.

Can Dogs Have Ground Beef?

Yes, dogs can have ground beef! Itโ€™s a good source of protein and essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Portion Control โ€“ Too much beef can lead to weight gain or nutritional imbalances, so it should be fed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
  • Cook It Thoroughly โ€“ Raw ground beef can contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli, so itโ€™s best to cook it fully before feeding it to your dog.
  • Avoid Seasonings โ€“ Garlic, onions, and excessive salt can be toxic to dogs, so serve plain, unseasoned beef.
  • Choose Lean Beef โ€“ High-fat beef can lead to digestive upset or even pancreatitis in some dogs. Opt for lean ground beef (90% lean or higher) if possible.

Can Dogs Eat Kale?

We often give our dogs kale in place of spinach for it’s health benefits and we find once it is chopped and cooked they enjoy it. They do not like it raw though!

Kale is a safe vegetable for dogs and a good source of iron with 1.6mg per 100g. As a comparison, beef has 1.99mg. Kale is low in calories, but a great source of flavonoids, calcium, magnesium, potassium, beta carotene, vitamin K, and vitamin C. It may help alleviate allergies and offer antioxidant, anti-diabetic and anti-cancer activities as well as your petโ€™s eye health and cognitive aging.

Kale is high in calcium oxalate which may not be suitable for dogs with kidney problems. If youโ€™re worried about oxalates in kale for predisposed dogs, boiling it can dramatically reduce them.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.
