I found that the downside of dehydrating was rather like using a slow cooker, in that the kitchen was full of an aroma my dogs loved and hung around like hungry sharks. With the occasional bark and whimper for a treat!

Can These Dog Treats Be Baked?
If you don’t have a dehydrator, don’t despair as these can be baked in the oven. We give full instructions for this in the recipe card below. But here is a brief summary:
- Set your oven to 170°F–200°F (75°C–95°C). Use the lowest setting possible. If your oven runs hot, prop the door open slightly with a wooden spoon to allow moisture to escape.
- Spread the beef and carrot mixture onto a tray, or place small nuggets of the mixture on.
- Bake for 2½–4 hours, depending on thickness and size.
- For extra dryness (longer shelf life), turn the oven off and let the treats sit inside as it cools completely.
The Ingredients
Just 2 simple ingredients make these tasty dog treats.

- Beef provides complete protein containing essential amino acids that support strong muscles, tissue repair, healthy skin and coat. Rich in iron and B vitamins. Using lean beef keeps the fat content moderate, making the treats more suitable for regular rewards rather than overly rich snacks.
- Carrots are a natural source of beta-carotene which the body converts into vitamin A. Vitamin A supports eye health, immune function and skin health. Carrots add gentle fibre that supports healthy digestion and stool consistency.
How To Make Beef Carrot Dog Treats in a Dehydrator
We make small balls of the mixture but a quicker way is to spread the mixture evenly on parchment paper and score into small squares. Half way through scooping out the mixture into small balls I vowed to use this quicker method next time!

Mix the lean beef and carrots.

Scoop out mini balls.

Place the balls on parchment paper and on a shelf or two in your dehydrator.

Dehydrate for 6 to 8 hours.
Recipe Tips
- Use 5% lean ground beef as lower fat beef dries better in a dehydrator and helps extend shelf life.
- Some dehydrators dry unevenly. Rotate trays halfway through for consistent results.
- Check for dryness by breaking a piece in half — there should be no visible moisture in the centre. If unsure, dry longer.
Recipe Variations
Since the base recipe is just lean beef and carrots, these additions won’t significantly change the dehydration time, but they will definitely level up the nutritional value.
- Parsley – add 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh parsley. Parsley is a natural deodorizer that can help freshen “doggy breath” and provides a boost of Vitamin K.
- Turmeric -add 1/2 teaspoon of ground turmeric and a tiny pinch of black pepper. Turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. The black pepper is essential here because it helps the body absorb the curcumin more effectively.
- Ground Flaxseeds or Chia Seeds – add 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds or chia seeds. These seeds are packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, which promote healthy skin and a glossy coat.
Storage Instructions
Properly dehydrated meat dog treats can be shelf-stable and safe to store at room temperature for up to a week, as long as they are fully dried. The key is to remove enough moisture by achieving a firm, brittle texture, which helps prevent bacterial growth. Store them in an airtight container or treat bag to keep them fresh, especially when taking them on walks.
Always allow the treats to cool fully after dehydrating before storing. This prevents condensation and moisture buildup.
- Refrigerate treats if not used immediately and use within 7–10 days.
- Room Temperature (Fully Dried & Crisp Only) – Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for 3–5 days
- Freeze for longer storage — up to 3 months.
- Do not feed treats that show signs of moisture, mould, or an off smell.
Introduce new treats gradually and supervise your dog the first time they try them.

- Small dogs: Break into smaller pieces — 1 batch could last 2–3 weeks (as training treats).
- Medium dogs: 1–2 treats per day.

Ingredients
- 1 lb lean ground beef 5% fat
- 1 medium carrot, peeled and grated
Instructions
Dehydrator Method
- In a bowl, add the ground beef and grated carrot and combine.
- Form small nugget pieces and place on a sheet of parchment paper.
- OR spread the mixture out on the parchment paper to a uniform thickness of about 1/4 inch. Use a pizza cutter or knife to "score" the meat into small squares or rectangles.
- Place the parchment paper in a dehydrator, set to 70C /160F and dehydrate for 6 to 8 hours until dry.
- Cool completely before storing.
Oven Method
- Preheat oven to 75–95°C (170–200°F). Prop door open slightly if possible
- Mix beef and carrot as above and shape into patties or roll out flat onto a parchment paper sheet. Place the scored meat on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. This allows air to circulate underneath the treats.
- Bake for 3 to 5 hours, keeping the oven door slightly propped open with a wooden spoon to allow moisture to escape. Flip halfway if using patties.
- Let the treats cool completely on the rack.
