Chicken & Salmon Dog Food Slow Cooker

Spread the love

This hearty Chicken and Salmon Dog Food made in a slow cooker is a wholesome, protein-packed meal your dog will love. It brings together lean chicken breasts, omega-rich salmon fillets, and nutrient-dense chicken livers-a balanced mix of high-quality animal proteins that support strong muscles, healthy skin, and a glossy coat.

We have recently purchased a slow cooker (was a nightmare to purchase in the Caribbean but that’s another story!) and we are loving the results and ease of recipes! However, we initially make a rookie mistake of cooking a batch of food overnight in the slow cooker. Never again! The dogs and cats had us up in the early hours due to the cooking smells.

The Benefits of Slow Cooking Dog Food Recipes

Slow cooking dog food is a gentle, convenient way to whip up nutritious homemade meals. The low, steady heat preserves nutrients while breaking down proteins and softening vegetables, making the food easier to digest-especially for senior dogs or those with sensitive stomachs. It enhances natural flavors, yields a tender texture, and makes batch cooking in one pot a breeze. All in all, slow cooking is a practical, wholesome method for preparing balanced, homemade meals your dog can enjoy.

The Ingredients

Hereโ€™s a breakdown of what each ingredient brings to your chicken and salmon slow cooker dog recipe.

Chopped vegetables, spices, coconut oil, and water are arranged on a wooden cutting board with raw salmon and organ meat in the background.
  • Chicken Breasts โ€“ Lean, easily digestible protein that supports muscle development and provides essential amino acids, B vitamins, and phosphorus.
  • Salmon Fillets โ€“ Rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) to support healthy skin, coat, joints, and brain function, plus a great source of vitamin D.
  • Chicken Livers โ€“ Nutrient-dense organ meat packed with iron, vitamin A, B vitamins, and copper for overall health and vitality.
  • Sweet Potato โ€“ Fibre-rich carbohydrate providing energy, beta-carotene, and antioxidants to support digestion and immune health.
  • Carrots โ€“ Low-calorie vegetable high in beta-carotene and fibre, supporting eye health and immune function.
  • Green Beans โ€“ Adds fibre, vitamins C and K, and minerals while helping bulk up meals without excess calories.
  • Pumpkin Purรฉe โ€“ Supports digestive health with soluble fibre and helps regulate stool consistency.
  • Water or Dog Friendly Broth โ€“ Keeps the meal moist and supports hydration (use low-sodium, onion- and garlic-free broth).
  • Fresh Dill – A gentle herb that may aid digestion and freshen breath, with added antioxidant benefits.
  • Sea Kelp โ€“ Natural source of iodine and trace minerals to support thyroid and metabolic health (use in moderation).
  • Turmeric + Pinch of Black Pepper โ€“ May support joint health and reduce inflammation; black pepper enhances turmeric absorption.
  • Flaxseed โ€“ Provides plant-based omega-3s and fibre for skin, coat, and digestive support.
  • Coconut Oil โ€“ Source of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) for energy, skin health, and cognitive support when used moderately.

After cooking, we add finely ground eggshell powder as a natural source of calcium to help balance the phosphorus in the meat and support strong bones and teeth.

Cool and ready to serve!

Recipe Tips

  • Place the chicken at the bottom of the slow cooker, as it takes slightly longer to cook than salmon. Add the salmon on top so it stays tender and doesnโ€™t overcook.
  • Dice the sweet potato small to ensure it becomes soft enough to mash easily into the mixture.
  • Check carefully for salmon bones before and after cooking, even if using fillets.
  • Shred the chicken and salmon thoroughly once cooked so the proteins are evenly distributed throughout the vegetables.
  • Adjust consistency if needed โ€” if the mixture is too thick, stir in a little warm water; if too thin, mash more sweet potato or pumpkin into the mix.

Storage Instructions

  • Cool completely before storing to prevent bacterial growth.
  • Refrigerate in airtight containers for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze in meal-sized portions for up to 3 months; thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.
  • Reheat gently if desired, but avoid boiling โ€” just warm slightly so itโ€™s safe for your dog to eat.
  • Stir well after reheating to evenly distribute any separated liquids or oils.
  • Check before serving: discard any portions that smell off or show signs of spoilage.
