Fish Pie For Dogs

Spread the love

We have made a fish pie for dogs that is made with flaky salmon and cod, sweet potato mash, vegetables, eggs, and a touch of Greek yogurt. Baked into individual pies, these are perfect for portioning or serving as a special dinner or topper for your dog. Add a candle for a birthday treat!

I recently made a British fish pie for a group of pensioners as part of a village lunch club and thought that I would try a doggie version as a fun treat. It was easy enough to adapt and the end result was a bit more stylish than the fish pie I made for the husband too!

This recipe is rich in omega-3 fatty acids from the salmon, alongside vitamins and fiber from the vegetables and sweet potatoes. It’s not something I would serve daily, but definitely for a special treat.

Can Dogs Eat Fish Pie?

Traditional fish pie recipes made for humans often contain ingredients that are not suitable for dogs, such as onions, leek, potatoes, large amounts of butter, cream, salt, or rich sauces. Most supermarket or restaurant fish pies are not ideal for dogs because they are usually high in salt, dairy, and seasoning.

A homemade fish pie for dogs can be a delicious and nutritious meal when prepared with safe ingredients. Using cooked fish, vegetables, and a simple sweet potato topping creates a comforting homemade dinner your dog can safely enjoy without the rich ingredients found in traditional human recipes.

Ingredients

This homemade fish pie for dogs is made with simple, dog friendly ingredients

A plate with raw cod and salmon fillets, hard-boiled eggs, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, nutritional yeast, Greek yoghurt, and curly parsley on a white surface.

Salmon Salmon is an oily fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may help support healthy skin, a shiny coat, joint function, and brain health. It also provides high-quality protein to support muscle maintenance.

CodCod is a lean white fish that is gentle on digestion and lower in fat than salmon. It adds extra protein while keeping the overall recipe light and balanced.

CarrotsCarrots are a great source of fibre and vitamin A, which supports eye health and immune function. They also add natural sweetness and texture.

Green BeansGreen beans are low in calories and provide fibre, vitamins, and minerals. They help add bulk and nutritional balance to the filling.

Sweet PotatoesSweet potatoes form the creamy topping of the pie. They are rich in dietary fibre, vitamin A, and antioxidants, and provide slow-releasing energy for dogs.

Hard Boiled Eggs – Often found in traditional British fish pies, I wanted to include these too as they are a favorite for our dogs. Eggs are a highly digestible source of protein and contain essential amino acids, vitamins, and healthy fats that support overall health.

Greek Yogurt – Plain Greek yogurt adds creaminess and probiotics, which may help support healthy digestion. It also helps bind the sweet potato mash. Omit if you want a dairy free recipe.

Nutritional Yeast – Nutritional yeast adds a savory, cheesy-style flavor while providing B vitamins, which support energy metabolism and overall wellbeing.

Curly ParsleyParsley adds freshness and contains antioxidants and vitamins. It also helps enhance flavor naturally without the need for salt or seasoning.

Recipe Tips

  • Check the fish carefully for bones before poaching and again after flaking to ensure it’s completely safe for dogs.
  • Use a mix of salmon and white fish to balance healthy fats with lean protein, or use just cod if you want a lighter version.
  • Mash the sweet potato until very smooth for easier spreading and a more even topping.
  • Let all ingredients cool before assembling to avoid curdling the yogurt or affecting texture.
  • Don’t over-season — this recipe doesn’t need salt or spices, as dogs don’t require them and some can be harmful.
  • Mix well for even distribution so each portion contains a balanced amount of fish, veg, and egg.
  • Use silicone or springform tins for easy removal and cleaner portions when serving or freezing.
  • Press the mixture down gently in the tins so the pie holds its shape when sliced.
  • Bake just until lightly set on top — overbaking can dry out the fish filling.

Storage Instructions

Refrigeration: Store the fish pies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Make sure they are fully cooled before storing to prevent condensation.
Freezing: These fish pies freeze very well. Wrap individual portions or slices tightly and place in a freezer-safe container or bag. Freeze for up to 2–3 months.
Defrosting: Thaw overnight in the fridge before serving. Avoid defrosting at room temperature for long periods.
Reheating (optional): You can serve chilled or gently warm the pie slightly. If reheating, ensure it is only lukewarm before feeding your dog.
Serving tip: Once defrosted, mix lightly or break apart if needed to restore texture before serving.
