Is Boiled Chicken Good For Dogs?

Yes, boiled chicken is great for dogs! It’s a lean source of protein, easy to digest, and perfect for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Many vets even recommend boiled chicken as part of a bland diet when dogs have digestive issues. However, keep these points in mind:

  • No seasoning โ€“ Avoid salt, garlic, onion, or spices, as they can be harmful.
  • No bones โ€“ Cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries.
  • Balanced diet โ€“ While chicken is healthy, dogs need a variety of nutrients, so it shouldnโ€™t be their only food.

Ingredients

This is a simple and easy recipe to make for your dog.

Ingredients for a Chicken and Rice Dog Food Recipe on a marble surface: raw chicken breasts on a plate, a bowl of rice, grated carrot, grated zucchini, and a small bowl of coconut oil.
  • Chicken Breasts
Chicken breasts are a high-quality, lean source of protein that helps to maintain your dogโ€™s muscle mass and support healthy growth. They are easy to digest, making them ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues. Boiling the chicken without seasoning ensures it stays simple and safe for your furry friend.
  • White Rice
White rice is a gentle carbohydrate that is easy on your dog’s digestive system. It helps to provide energy and is often used in bland diets to settle upset stomachs. When combined with protein like chicken, white rice helps create a well-rounded, easily digestible meal.
  • Carrots
Carrots are a low-calorie vegetable that is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They’re great for your dogโ€™s overall health, including supporting healthy vision and a shiny coat. Plus, they provide a crunchy texture that many dogs enjoy!
  • Zucchini
Zucchini is a nutrient-packed, low-calorie vegetable that is great for hydration and digestive health. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, it helps to support a healthy immune system while being gentle on your dogโ€™s stomach. Itโ€™s also a great source of fiber to aid in digestion.
  • Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a healthy fat that can promote a shiny coat, support brain function, and boost your dog’s overall well-being. It has antimicrobial properties and can help with digestion. Used in moderation, itโ€™s a nutritious addition to your dogโ€™s diet. This can be substituted with olive oil.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

HOW TO MAKE CHICKEN AND RICE DOG FOOD RECIPE

Skinless and boneless chicken breasts are used in this homemade dog food recipe as the white meat is easier on your dog’s digestion. The chicken and white rice are cooked together in a pot, then mixed with lightly cooked vegetables. We added the vegetables for extra vitamins but these can be omitted if you need a bland meal.

We shred the cooked chicken breasts so it’s easier to eat but you could cut the cooked chicken breast into small pieces for the size of your dog.

STORAGE AND FREEZING

Store the homemade chicken and rice dog food in the fridge in an airtight container. It will last up to 4 days.

This can also be frozen for when you need a bland dog food. Spoon a serving portion into ziplocked bags and remove the air (I suck the air out with a straw). The dog food will last for up to 3 months in the freezer.

Defrost the dog food in the refrigerator and ensure that the chicken and rice are thoroughly defrosted before giving to your dogs. You could gently warm the food before serving too.

RECIPE TIPS

For a very bland dish specifically for an upset stomach, omit the vegetables and serve just the chicken and white rice.

You could use brown rice in place of the white if you are not feeding this for any upset stomach reasons.

This recipe can also be made in an instant pot.

  1. It would be helpful if you had measurements or weight for each ingredient. My vet recommended 60% meat, 20% mixed vegetables & 10% carbs (brown rice) increase based on stool w/ pro prebiotic mixed AT TIME OF SERVING.

    1. There’s a button on the recipe card that will give you metric measurements with a click.

    2. Hmm. Good to know, except it doesnโ€™t add up to 100%, so perhaps thereโ€™s a typo?

    1. One way to add calories to your dog’s diet is to supplement their food with appropriate human food. Examples of safe human food supplements include roasted chicken without the skin, boiled eggs, canned tuna, non-fat plain yoghurt, or plain canned pumpkin.
I had the same issue with my youngest dog and I started added a sachet of dog food to his meals. Double check with your vet though.
