Cooking with an Air Fryer

Using an air fryer to make dog treats is a convenient and healthy way to create delicious snacks for your furry friend. The air fryer uses hot air circulation to cook treats, which requires less oil and helps retain nutrients.

Preheat the air fryer before use to ensure even cooking.

Ingredients

4 ingredients are all you need to make these homemade dog treats.

A marble surface with bowls of rice flour, pumpkin puree, and peanut butter, labeled accordingly, alongside two whole eggs.
  • Rice Flour – is a gluten-free flour suitable for dogs and has a similar texture to wheat flour. This can be substituted with other dog friendly flours.
  • Pumpkin Puree – we use our homemade recipe but if you use any canned pumpkin puree ensure it’s not pumpkin pie filling and is free from any sugars or additives.
  • Eggs – A great source of protein and help binds the dough.
  • Peanut Butter – Use plain peanut butter and check the labels as some brands use xylitol, a sweetener that can be toxic to dogs.

Storage

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Make sure theyโ€™re completely cooled before storing to prevent moisture buildup. For longer shelf life, refrigerate the cookies in an airtight container. They will last for about 2 weeks when stored this way.

Freezing Dog Treats

Freeze the cookies in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be stored for up to 3 months. When ready to use, simply thaw the cookies at room temperature before serving.

Recipe Tips

If the dough is too sticky, add more rice flour to make it easier to roll and cut into shapes. If it’s too dry, add a bit of water or extra pumpkin puree.

Check for a firm texture and golden-brown color to ensure the cookies are thoroughly cooked. Overcooking will make them extra crunchy, while undercooking can leave them soft.

How Many Treats to Give

The number of air fryer pumpkin dog treats you should give depends on your dog’s size, weight, and dietary needs. Here’s a general guideline:

  • Small Dogs (up to 15 lbs): 1-2 small treats per day
  • Medium Dogs (15-40 lbs): 2-3 treats per day
  • Large Dogs (40+ lbs): 3-5 treats per day

Remember, treats should make up no more than 10% of your dogโ€™s daily calorie intake. Always monitor your dog for any signs of food sensitivities or digestive issues when introducing new treats.
