CAN DOGS EAT PUMPKIN?

Pumpkin is a great food if your dog as an upset stomach and is a great source of fiber and nutrients.

Although dogs can eat raw pumpkin (without the skin) they actually digest pureed pumpkin better. We make our own pumpkin puree for dog treats and added to their dinner.

If you are going to use canned pumpkin make sure that it’s plain and not pumpkin pie as that is full of sugar and not suitable for dogs.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

INGREDIENTS

Just 3 easy ingredients are all you need to make these pumpkin dog treats.

Two bowls on a marble surface. The top bowl contains pumpkin puree, while the bottom bowl holds Greek yogurt. Each labeled bowl is perfect for whipping up some frozen pumpkin dog treats.
  • Pumpkin puree – Homemade or canned.
  • Greek Yoghurt – This has a higher level or probiotics than natural yogurt. For a dairy free dog treat use coconut yogurt.
  • Turmeric – this is optional but gives the treats a slightly brighter color.

Making frozen dog treats is so quick and easy.

A container filled with yellowish-orange baby food that resembles frozen pumpkin dog treats. A small metal spoon rests on the surface next to the container, while a white paper towel is underneath.

Place the ingredients in a bowl and mix.

Two pink silicone molds each contain nine flower-shaped cavities filled with a yellowish substance, resembling frozen pumpkin dog treats, placed on a dark countertop.

Spoon the mixture into an ice cube tray or silicone mold and freeze.

Once they are frozen, we remove ours from the silicone molds then place them in a zip lock bag for future treats. These prevents freezer burn too.

VARIATIONS

  • Replace the turmeric with cinnamon
  • Add natural peanut butter to the mixture (ensure that the peanut butter is sugar free with no xylitol as that is very poisonous for dogs).
  • Coconut yogurt makes a lactose intolerant treat.

HOW MANY FROZEN TREATS SHOULD I GIVE MY DOG?

As with all treats they should be included in your dog’s daily calorie allowance. We would advice 1 or 2 a day is enough.
