My dogs loved this and were very excited when it came to taste testing time. I would advice you cut up the burger and give in bites as they will try to eat the whole thing in one go. Or thatโ€™s just my pups!

Can Dogs Eat Hamburgers?

When prepared correctly, dogs can enjoy hamburgers, provided they are free of harmful ingredients like onions. Unlike us, the burgers for dogs should not be seasoned. However, itโ€™s crucial to be cautious with portion sizes and toppings. Excessive consumption of hamburgers, even with safe ingredients, can pose health risks to dogs, so moderation is key.

Ingredients

Just 2 ingredients make the burger and we have included an optional topping of a cheddar cheese slice.

  • Beef โ€“ ground beef should be lean of at least 80%. The ground beef could be replaced with ground chicken, turkey or lamb or any other healthy source of protein.
  • Parsley โ€“ aids digestion.
  • Cheese slice โ€“ a plain slice of cheese is entirely optional for the topping. If your dog is lactose intolerant, do not use.

Dog Friendly Hamburger Bun

Burger buns are typically made with ingredients like wheat flour, yeast and sometimes added sugars or preservatives, which may not be well tolerated by all dogs. Additionally, the high carbohydrate content in burger buns can contribute to weight gain and other health issues if consumed regularly in large quantities.

We served our burger for dogs in a coconut flour bun. Itโ€™s adapted from a recipe I use for a coconut flour grilled cheese. For this we used 2 tablespoons coconut flour, 2 eggs, 3 tablespoons water and 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. All ingredients are mixed in a lightly oiled ramekin dish and microwaved for 2 minutes until firm. Once cool, the bun is sliced in half.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

Dog Burger Toppings

Do not use traditional toppings such as tomatoes, ketchup, onions and mustard. Keep any toppings simple, if used. We served ours with a few baby spinach leaves but they were not met with approval from our pups!

  • If you prefer to bake your burger, place the burger patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
