Is Duck Good For Dogs?

Duck is a rich, nutrient-dense meat that provides high-quality protein to help support muscle health. It’s also a good source of iron, zinc, and B vitamins, which contribute to energy levels, immune function, and overall wellbeing. Because it’s considered a “novel protein,” duck is often a good option for dogs with sensitivities or allergies to more common meats like chicken or beef.

  • Naturally sweet and tasty – Finely grated carrot brings a subtle sweetness that balances the rich duck flavor.
  • Great for reward time – Thanks to the strong aroma and protein boost, these treats are perfect for training or special treats.

Ingredients

We use just 4 ingredients to make these duck dog treats.

Duck breast strips, a whole egg, oat flour in a bowl, and grated carrots in a measuring jug displayed on a white surface—labelled as ingredients for homemade duck dog treats.

Duck Breast Strips
Duck is a rich, high-quality protein that adds irresistible flavor to these treats. When baked, the thin strips wrap around the dough to create a slightly chewy, savory outer layer that dogs love. We purchased our duck breast strips from a supermarket. But you could purchase duck breasts, remove the skin, then thinly slice them

Grated Carrot
Carrots add natural sweetness, moisture, and a boost of nutrients like beta-carotene and fiber. Grating them finely helps them blend smoothly into the dough for a soft texture.

Egg
The egg acts as a natural binder, helping hold the dough together while adding extra protein and nutrients for your dog.

Oat Flour
Oat flour creates a gentle, easy-to-digest base for the treats. It gives a soft, slightly hearty texture and is a great alternative to wheat for dogs with sensitivities. Making your own oat flour is as simple as adding rolled oats in a food processor and blitz until finely ground. Cheaper too which is always a bonus!

How To Make Duck Carrot Dog Treats

Wrapping duck breasts around a carrot dog treat is simple and fun to make, even your kids will enjoy making these. We rolled the carrot dough mixture in parchment paper for an even stick but they were a bit chunky. Next time we will try for thinner sticks to make more.

Recipe Tips

Slice the duck thinly – Thin strips wrap more easily around the dough and cook evenly, giving you that perfect chewy outer layer without overcooking. Our strips in the photos are on the chunky side. Next time we will try to slice them thinner and try the trick we use in our chicken jerky recipe, of placing them in the freezer beforehand!

Squeeze excess moisture from the carrot – If your grated carrot is very wet, lightly squeeze it to prevent the dough from becoming too sticky.

Adjust the dough texture – If the dough feels too wet, add a little more oat flour. If it’s too dry, a splash of water or a bit more egg can help bring it together.

Chill the dough if needed – If the dough is sticky to handle, refrigerate it for 10–15 minutes to make shaping easier.

Wrap snugly, but not too tight – Gently wrap the duck around each piece so it stays in place but still cooks evenly.

Bake until fully cooked through – Make sure the duck is thoroughly cooked before serving. The outside should be firm and slightly crisp.

Cool completely before serving – Let the treats cool fully so they firm up and are safe for your dog to enjoy.

Storage Instructions

  • Refrigerator – Store the cooled treats in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. Because these contain fresh duck and egg, they should be kept chilled.
  • Freezer – For longer storage, freeze the treats in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. They will keep for up to 2–3 months.
  • To Serve – Thaw frozen treats in the fridge overnight or let them sit at room temperature for a short time before serving.

Tip – If the treats become slightly soft in the fridge, you can reheat them briefly in a low oven to firm them up again—just be sure they are fully cooled before giving them to your dog.

Ingredients

  • 7 oz duck breast strips thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup finely grated carrot
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup oat flour

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the finely grated carrot and egg into a bowl. Mix together.
  • Add the oat flour and mix into a dough.
  • Divide the dough into small, equal portions and roll each piece into a short log or small treat shape. We roll out the dough in parchment paper for an even roll and it's a less sticky process.
  • Take a thin strip of duck breast and gently wrap it around each dough piece, pressing lightly so it stays in place.
  • Place the wrapped treats onto the prepared baking tray, leaving a little space between each one.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the duck is fully cooked and slightly crisp around the edges.
  • Remove from the oven and allow the treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
  • Once cooled, store in an airtight container in the fridge or freeze for later use.
