Butternut Squash For Dogs

Butternut squash can be a healthy addition to your dog’s diet when prepared properly. Butternut squash is packed with essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, which can aid in digestion. It’s relatively low in calories, making it a great option for dogs who need to manage their weight.

Coconut Flour for Dogs

Coconut flour can be a healthy alternative flour option for dogs, especially for those with allergies or sensitivities to grains like wheat. It’s rich in dietary fiber, which can aid in digestion and promote bowel regularity. Coconut flour has a lower glycemic index compared to wheat flour, which means it won’t cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

How to Make Butternut Squash Coconut Flour Cookies

This is an easy dog treat recipe to make. The thinner you roll the dough, the crispier the cookie.

Roll out and cut into cookie shapes.

A baking sheet lined with parchment paper holds 19 raw, circular cookies arranged in rows.

Place on a baking sheet and cook until firm.

Cool and give out as a treat.

Storage

Before storing the cookies, ensure they have cooled completely to room temperature. Place the cooled cookies in an airtight container and store in the fridge. They should last up to a week.

Freezing

If you’ve made a large batch or want to store the cookies for an extended period, freezing is an option. Place the cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze until solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. Thaw individual cookies as needed by placing them in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

Recipe Tips

Coconut flour can absorb a lot of moisture, so the dough might be crumbly at first. If it’s too dry, add a little bit of water or coconut oil to help bind the ingredients together. Conversely, if the dough is too wet, add a bit more coconut flour until you achieve a workable consistency.

While dogs don’t require added flavorings, you can incorporate dog-safe herbs like parsley or mint for a hint of freshness. Just avoid using ingredients like salt, sugar, or artificial sweeteners, as they can be harmful to dogs.

Keep an eye on the cookies while they’re baking to prevent them from overcooking. Coconut flour can brown quickly, so it’s best to check for doneness a few minutes before the recommended baking time.
