Is Tuna Safe For Dogs?

Yes, tuna can be safe for dogs in moderation โ€” especially when it’s used as an occasional treat, like in your homemade dog treat recipe. But there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure it’s healthy and safe:

โœ… Why Tuna Can Be Safe:

  • High in protein โ€“ great for energy and muscle health.
  • Rich in omega-3 fatty acids โ€“ supports skin, coat, and joint health.
  • Dogs love the strong aroma and flavor โ€“ makes it perfect for treats or training rewards.

โš ๏ธ What to Watch Out For:

  • Mercury content: Tuna (especially larger types like albacore or bluefin) can contain higher levels of mercury compared to smaller fish like sardines or salmon. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s best to serve tuna occasionally, not daily.
  • Choose tuna packed in water, not oil or brine: Oil adds unnecessary fat and salt can be harmful.
  • No added seasonings or onions/garlic: These are toxic to dogs. Always go plain.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

Why Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

These tuna treats are irresistible for fish-loving dogs! Tuna provides a strong aroma and flavor thatโ€™s super appealing to pups, making these a great high-value treat for training or just showing a little extra love. Plus, the crunchy texture from the baked eggshells and flours makes them both satisfying and great for dental health.

  • Tuna (canned in water): A fantastic source of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which support a healthy coat, joints and immune system.
  • Eggs (3 medium, including shells): Whole eggs offer additional protein and essential nutrients, while the crushed shells are a natural source of calcium for strong bones and teeth.
  • Flaxseed meal: Loaded with fiber and omega-3s, flaxseed helps support digestion and skin health.
  • Coconut flour : A grain-free, gluten-free flour rich in fiber and healthy fats, making these treats easy on your dogโ€™s tummy.

How To Make Baked Tuna Dog Treats

A food processor is best for this recipe as the eggshell is used and needs to be as ground up as you can.

Place all ingredients in a blender.

A food processor whirls a mix of brown and beige ingredients, forming a coarse tuna paste around the central blade, like something your dog might sniff out with interest.

Recipe Tips

Blend well: Use a food processor or blender to make sure the eggshells are ground down finely before baking.

Customize the size: Cut or mold the treats into bite-sized pieces for smaller dogs or training sessions.

Baking time: Depending on your oven and the thickness of your treats, bake until firm and slightly golden on the edges for the perfect crunch.

Storage Tips

Store treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

For longer storage, freeze in a zip-top bag or container for up to 2 months.

Let frozen treats thaw at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.
