These homemade chicken and broccoli dog treats are a wholesome and tasty snack for your furry friend. Made with simple, healthy ingredients, these treats combine protein-rich chicken, fiber-packed broccoli and coconut flour, which is a great alternative for dogs with grain sensitivities

A plate of bite-sized baked cheese balls sits on a marble countertop, with more cheese balls stored in a glass jar in the background.

We made these treats into small bite sized pieces for easy snacking. My dogs loved these but they are fans of chicken so would happily have eaten all of them. Even the husband was eyeing these up for a snack!

Coconut Flour for Dogs

Coconut flour is a popular ingredient in homemade dog treats and meals due to its health benefits and suitability for dogs with grain sensitivities. Made from dried coconut meat, this flour is gluten-free and high in fiber, making it a good alternative to traditional wheat or grain-based flours.

When using coconut flour in dog recipes, it's important to note that it absorbs more moisture than other flours, so recipes may require additional liquids. Also, while coconut flour is generally safe for dogs, it should be introduced gradually to avoid any digestive upset due to its high fiber content.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

Ingredients

Just 5 ingredients make these healthy homemade dog treats.

Image showing bowls of cooked chicken, coconut flour, cheddar cheese, and broccoli, with an egg in the center. Each ingredient is labeled.
  • Cooked chicken - we used left over poached chicken and chopped it finely.
  • Broccoli - cooked before use and finely chopped.
  • Cheddar cheese - can be omitted for a dairy free treat.
  • Eggs - a great source of protein
  • Coconut flour - this can be substituted with other dog friendly flours. The volume used may need to be increased.

How to Make Chicken Broccoli Dog Treats

This is an easy baked dog treat to make with leftover chicken (as long as it's not seasoned with anything not suitable for dogs). Making the treats into the tiny pieces we made does take a while though! Feel free to adjust the size of the treats based on your dog's size and preferences.

Storage

Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze them for longer storage.

Recipe Tips

Coconut flour absorbs a lot of moisture, so if the dough seems too dry, gradually add more chicken broth or water until it's pliable.

Tailor the size of the treats to your dog’s size. Smaller dogs may need smaller treats, while larger dogs can handle bigger portions.

Feel free to add a pinch of dog-safe herbs like parsley or a spoonful of pureed pumpkin for added flavor and nutrition.

Monitor the baking time closely, as ovens vary. Bake until treats are golden brown and firm to ensure they hold up well.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked chicken unseasoned
  • ½ cup broccoli, steamed
  • ⅓ cup Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ½ cup coconut flour
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup water (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Ensure that the chicken is cooked and finely chopped or shredded. Steam the broccoli until soft, then chop it into small, dog-friendly pieces.
  • In a large bowl, combine the cooked chicken, steamed broccoli, egg, cheddar cheese and coconut flour. Mix well to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • Stir until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little water or coconut oil one tablespoon at a time, until the dough is workable.
  • Scoop out small portions of the dough and roll them into balls, or flatten them into small cookie shapes. You can also use cookie cutters to create fun shapes.
  • Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and firm to the touch.
  • Allow the treats to cool completely before serving them to your dog. Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week, or freeze them for longer storage.

This recipe made 60 small bite sized treats with a serving being 3 treats.
