Homemade Dog Breath Treats

Spread the love

These homemade dog breath treats are a great way to keep your pupโ€™s breath fresh while ensuring they enjoy a tasty and healthy snack. These treats are made with fresh parsley and mint, known for their breath-freshening properties and coconut flour to keep these treats grain-free and low carb too.

My dogs enjoyed these and the fresh herbs didn’t put them off. I made the treats small as coconut flour is high in fiber and can be very filling.

Herbs for Fresh Dog Breath

Certain herbs can help freshen your dog’s breath naturally and support their overall oral health. Here are a few commonly recommended herbs:

  1. Parsley – Parsley is rich in chlorophyll, which has natural deodorizing properties. It can help neutralize odors and freshen breath.
  2. Mint – Mint is another herb known for its breath-freshening abilities. It also has antibacterial properties that can help combat the bacteria in your dogโ€™s mouth.
  3. Dill – Dill can help freshen breath and has antimicrobial properties that can help reduce bacteria in the mouth.
  4. Cinnamon – Cinnamon can help to reduce bacteria in the mouth and freshen breath. However, use it in moderation as it can be strong for dogs.
  5. FennelFennel can help improve digestion and reduce bad breath. It’s a gentle herb that’s safe for dogs in small amounts.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

Ingredients

All you need to make these homemade dog treats are a few easy ingredients.

  • Coconut Flour – is gluten-free, rich in fiber and has a lower glycemic index than many other flours, making it suitable for dogs, especially those with wheat allergies or sensitivities.
  • Greek Yogurt – helps to bind the dough as well as adding to the protein content. If you want the treats dairy free, use coconut yogurt or unsweetened apple sauce.
  • Fresh Parsley – also helps aid digestion.
  • Fresh Mint – known for its breath-freshening properties and can also offer some digestive benefits.
  • Coconut oil – can help improve digestion and nutrient absorption. It can also help with digestive disorders like inflammatory bowel syndrome and colitis.
  • Eggs – helps bind the mixture and is a good source of protein.

How to Make Homemade Dog Breath Treats

We find that you may need to add water to the mixture to bind the dough as different brands of coconut flour can vary in absorbing liquid.

Storage

Store the treats in an airtight container to keep them fresh and prevent exposure to air and moisture. We store our treats in the fridge so they keep firm. They should last up to 7 days.

Freezing

For even longer storage, you can freeze the treats. Place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. Frozen treats can last for several months. When youโ€™re ready to use them, simply thaw the treats at room temperature for a few hours.

Recipe Tips

Coconut flour absorbs a lot of moisture, so the dough might seem drier than other types of dough. If it’s too dry to work with, gradually add more liquid (water, broth, or applesauce) until it reaches a workable consistency.

The coconut flour can be replaced by other dog friendly flour.

When cutting out treats, aim for uniform sizes to ensure even baking. This prevents some treats from being overcooked while others are undercooked.
