My dogs enjoyed this lamb recipe and I tested them individually rather than feed as a pack to ascertain their true reaction. Not a single “nope” was given. I put the cooked dog food in a food processor to ensure all the ingredients were mixed well for better digestion too.

Can Dogs Eat Lamb?

Lamb is rich in high-quality protein, essential for muscle growth and repair. Protein is also crucial for maintaining a healthy coat and skin. Lamb contains essential amino acids that dogs need for various bodily functions, including tissue repair, nutrient absorption, and hormone production. It also provides important minerals like zinc and iron, which are vital for immune function and oxygen transport in the blood.

For dogs with food sensitivities or allergies, lamb can be an excellent alternative to more commonly used proteins like chicken or beef. Its novel protein status makes it less likely to cause allergic reactions.

Ingredients

Feel free to adapt this recipe with different vegetables.

  • Ground Lamb – Opt for lean ground lamb with a fat content of around 85-90%. Excess fat can lead to obesity and other health issues in dogs, so it’s important to choose leaner cuts.
  • Lamb Liver – can be substituted for beef, pork or chicken liver.
  • Sweet Potato – an excellent source of dietary fiber, which aids in digestion. We used homemade sweet potato puree.
  • Blueberries – high in antioxidants, particularly vitamin C and vitamin E.
  • Ground Ginger – use grated fresh ginger if you have it. Great for it’s anti-inflammatory and digestive properties.
  • Eggs – an excellent source of complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids required for muscle growth, tissue repair, and overall health. We use the whole eggs as the food is finished in a food processor.
  • Coconut Oil – can aid in digestion by improving nutrient absorption
  • Kale – contains oxalates, which can interfere with calcium absorption and contribute to the formation of kidney stones in some dogs. If your dog has a history of kidney issues, consult your veterinarian before adding kale to their diet.
  • Ground Flaxseed – is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid that supports skin and coat health, reduces inflammation, and promotes heart health.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.
