Can Dogs Have Apple Pie?
Dogs can enjoy a specially-made apple pie, but it must be prepared with dog-safe ingredients. Traditional apple pies for humans often contain ingredients that are harmful to dogs, such as added sugar, butter and nutmeg. Nutmeg is particularly toxic to dogs, and excess sugar can lead to digestive issues, obesity or diabetes. Pies made with regular wheat flour may also not be ideal for dogs with gluten sensitivities.
However, by following a dog-specific apple pie recipe, you can make a delicious and safe treat for your furry friend.
Ingredients

When making apple pie for dogs, it’s important to use ingredients that are safe and beneficial, such as:
- Apples: They are nutritious and provide fiber, vitamins A and C. Be sure to remove the seeds and core, as apple seeds contain cyanide, which is harmful to dogs.
- Dog-safe flours: Oat flour and coconut flour are good options because they are gluten-free and easier for dogs to digest. Just ensure that the oat flour is certified gluten-free, as some oats can be processed in facilities that handle wheat and may contain traces of gluten.
- Natural sweeteners like applesauce: Choose unsweetened applesauce to avoid extra sugar.
- Cinnamon: In small amounts, cinnamon is safe for dogs and adds a warm flavor.

Recipe Tips
Choose Dog-Safe Apples: Use sweeter apple varieties like Fuji, Gala or Honeycrisp. Avoid tart or sour apples like Granny Smith, as dogs might not enjoy the taste.
Test the Dough’s Moisture: If the dough feels too crumbly, add a little more applesauce or water, one teaspoon at a time, until it reaches the right consistency. Coconut flour tends to absorb a lot of moisture, so adjusting may be necessary.
Avoid Overcooking the Filling: The filling should be tender but not mushy. Slightly undercooking the apples will help maintain some texture, making it more enjoyable for your dog.
Add an Optional Crunchy Topping: Sprinkle a little bit of finely chopped dog-safe nuts, like peanuts or almonds, on top of the filling before baking for an added texture boost.
Serve in Small Portions: While this pie is made with dog-friendly ingredients, it’s still a treat. Serve in small portions as an occasional reward.

Storage
The pies can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Make sure to let the pie cool completely before refrigerating. Keep them in an airtight container.
Room temperature storage is not recommended for dog-friendly pies due to the absence of preservatives. Bacteria can grow quickly, so keeping the pie refrigerated or frozen ensures it stays safe and fresh for your pup.
Freezing
The apple pies can be frozen for up to 2 months. Wrap the individual pies in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer-safe container or zip-lock bag.
When ready to serve, thaw the pie slices in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for a few hours. Avoid microwaving, as it may change the texture and make the pie too hot for your dog.
