Ingredients

Labeled ingredients on a marble surface: chicken breasts on a plate, bowls of chicken livers, green beans, carrots, pumpkin, parsley, and fresh ginger.
  • Chicken Breast โ€“ We use boneless and skinless chicken breasts. Itโ€™s easy to digest and perfect for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Chicken thigh meat could be substituted.
  • Chicken Livers โ€“ Liver supports immune function, vision and overall vitality, but should be fed in moderation due to its high vitamin A content.
  • Pumpkin โ€“ A fiber-rich ingredient that aids digestion, helps regulate bowel movements, and can soothe an upset stomach.
  • Carrots โ€“ Low in calories but high in vitamins A and K, carrots promote healthy vision, skin and immune function.
  • Green Beans โ€“ A nutritious, low-calorie vegetable packed with fiber, vitamins C and K and antioxidants. They help support digestion and provide essential nutrients without adding excess carbohydrates.
  • Fresh Ginger โ€“ Known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits, ginger can help soothe nausea and support gut health. It also contains antioxidants that promote overall well-being.
  • Fresh Parsley โ€“ Adds a natural source of antioxidants, vitamins C and K and helps freshen your dogโ€™s breath. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Water โ€“ Hydrates and helps create a stew-like consistency, making it easy for your dog to eat and digest. Adjust the amount to reach your desired thickness.

How To Make Chicken Stew For Dogs

We made this on the stove but it can be made in the instant pot or a slow cooker. We give instructions for these in the recipe card below.

Pot on a stove containing raw chicken, chopped carrots, squash, ginger, and parsley in water.

Add all ingredients in a pot, boil and simmer.

Shred the chicken, cool and it’s ready to serve.

Recipe Tips

  • Use fresh ingredients for the best nutrition. Avoid canned vegetables that may have added salt or preservatives.
  • Chop vegetables into small, bite-sized pieces to make digestion easier for your pup.
  • Adjust water consistency based on your dogโ€™s preferenceโ€”more water creates a thinner stew, while less water results in a thicker consistency.
  • Let the stew cool before serving to prevent burns.
  • Substitute the vegetables with others such as sweet potatoes, peas or broccoli.

Storage Tips for Chicken Stew for Dogs

Serving: Always let the stew cool to room temperature before serving to avoid burning your dogโ€™s mouth. Reheat portions gently in the microwave or on the stove, and make sure itโ€™s not too hot.

Refrigeration: Store leftover stew in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Freezing: Portion the stew into freezer-safe bags or containers and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.

How Many Servings Does This Make?

This recipe should yield about 4 to 5 cups of stew, depending on how much water you use and how much the ingredients break down during cooking. You can adjust the water to reach your desired consistency, but this should give you a good amount to work with for multiple servings.
