This fish and sweet potato dog food recipe has just 3 natural ingredients and is a grain-free dinner your dog will enjoy.

If your dog is allergic to chicken or beef, fish is a great source of protein for them. It’s low in calories and carbohydrates too.

My dogs went crazy for this recipe and I served it alongside a few extra toppers for dinner. They are becoming huge fans of fish and this would be a great meal if they ever lost their appetite. The fish smells seems to revive their senses.

Fish is a great source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids for dogs as well as being low in carbohydrates. The fish must be cooked thoroughly and all bones removed before serving to your dog. Do not season the fish as you would your own.

Is Sweet Potato Good for Dogs?

Sweet potatoes are a great source of antioxidant, vitamin A and fiber. They contain beta-carotene that can be a natural anti-inflammatory nutrient. Sweet potatoes should not be given raw as they can be difficult to digest, and should be served cooked.

How to Make Fish and Sweet Potato Dog Food

The fish can be grilled, steamed or baked. We baked it for this recipe.

Boil or steam the sweet potato

Bake the fish fillets in an oven.

Remove any fish bones, add to the sweet potato and mash.

Serve to a happy dog.

Variations

Cooked white fish is safe for dogs and you can use cod, flounder or haddock.

Storage

Once cooked and cooled, store this homemade fish and sweet potato dog food recipe in an air tight container in the fridge. It should last up to 3 days.

This can be frozen once cooked but should be defrosted thoroughly before gently reheating and serving.

Ingredients
 
 

  • 2.5 oz salmon
  • 5.5 oz white fish
  • 7 oz sweet potato
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions
 

  • Peel and cube the sweet potato. Boil or steam until tender. Drain the water and set aside.
  • Place the salmon and white fish on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 200C/400F degrees until cooked through.
  • Remove any bones from the fish.
  • Place the fish and sweet potato in a large mixing bowl and mash to combine.
  • You are ready to serve.
