Ingredients

We never use baking powder in our pupcakes so they do not rise but our dogs have not complained so far! Baking powder is not considered safe for dogs in large amounts and should generally be avoided in homemade dog treats, especially if the recipe doesn’t require it.

Salmon is a powerhouse of omega-3 fatty acids, which help promote healthy skin and a shiny coat, reduce inflammation, and support heart and brain health. It’s also a great source of lean protein to support muscle maintenance and overall energy. Always use salmon canned in water with no added salt or seasonings.

Sweet Potato Puree – Sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fiber, which supports digestive health, and are loaded with vitamin A (great for vision and immune support), vitamin C, and potassium. They’re low in fat and a great source of natural sweetness.

Egg – Eggs provide high-quality protein, amino acids, and essential nutrients like vitamin D, B12, and selenium. They help bind the pupcakes and contribute to a fluffy, moist texture.

Oat Flour – is a gentle, gluten-free grain alternative thatโ€™s safe for most dogs. It contains soluble fiber, which supports digestion, and provides iron, magnesium, and B vitamins. It’s also a good option for pups with wheat sensitivities. This can be substituted with other dog friendly flours.

Unsweetened Applesauce – adds moisture and a touch of natural sweetness without any added sugar. It contains antioxidants, vitamin C, and dietary fiber, which supports immune and digestive health. Just make sure itโ€™s unsweetened (we make our own applesauce rather than store bought) and free from artificial additives or xylitol (which is toxic to dogs).

How To Make Salmon Sweet Potato Pupcakes

We use silicone cases for ease of pupcake removal when cooled.

Frosting the Pupcakes

Frosting the sweet potato pupcakes is entirely optional. I added a mixture of plain Greek yogurt and peanut butter, with blue spirulina for coloring purely for the photos, although my dogs loved it.

Pupcake Frosting Ideas

Greek Yogurt Frosting

  • Use plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt
  • High in protein and probiotics
  • Can chill or add oat flour for thicker texture

Peanut Butter & Yogurt Frosting

  • Mix 2 tbsp Greek yogurt with 1 tbsp natural, xylitol-free peanut butter
  • Creamy and flavorful
  • Adds healthy fats and protein

Mashed Sweet Potato Frosting

  • Use plain cooked, mashed sweet potato
  • Thin with a splash of water or applesauce
  • Naturally sweet and full of fiber

Banana Yogurt Frosting

  • Mix ยฝ ripe banana with 2 tbsp Greek yogurt
  • Creamy and slightly sweet
  • Rich in potassium and vitamins

Coconut Cream Frosting

  • Chill unsweetened coconut cream overnight, then whip
  • Optional: mix with yogurt or banana for flavor
  • Use sparingly due to high fat content

Recipe Tips

  • Use silicone molds or mini muffin tins for smaller, bite-sized pupcakesโ€”great for small dogs or training treats.
  • Drain salmon lightly if the mixture feels too wet, but keeping a bit of the water adds flavor and moisture.
  • Donโ€™t overmixโ€”just combine until ingredients are incorporated to keep the pupcakes soft and fluffy.
  • Taste and smell are keyโ€”dogs love strong scents, so using salmon makes this recipe extra enticing.
  • Cool completely before serving to avoid burning your pupโ€™s mouth.

Recipe Variations

Add finely shredded carrots or zucchini for extra fiber and vitamins.

Substitute tuna or cooked chicken if your dog isnโ€™t a fan of salmon.

Use mashed pumpkin instead of sweet potato for a seasonal twist.

Sprinkle with chopped parsley or dried kelp for fresh breath and added nutrients.

Storage Tips

Refrigerator:
Store cooled pupcakes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Freezer:
Freeze unfrosted pupcakes in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Theyโ€™ll keep for up to 2 months.

Thawing:
Defrost in the fridge overnight or at room temperature for a couple of hours before serving.

Frosted Pupcakes:
If using a yogurt-based frosting, keep them in the fridge and serve within 2โ€“3 days, as the topping can spoil faster.
