Is Zucchini Good For Dogs?

Zucchini (or courgette if you are in the UK) is generally safe and healthy for dogs when served plain and in moderation. It is low in fat and calories, making it an excellent treat option for dogs who need lighter snacks or weight-conscious diets.

Zucchini contains nutrients such as:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B6
  • Potassium
  • Fiber
  • Antioxidants

The fiber in zucchini may help support healthy digestion, while the low calorie content makes it ideal for training treats or everyday snacking.

Why These Zucchini Chips Are Good for Your Dogs

These homemade dehydrated zucchini chips are:

  • Low calorie and low fat
  • Naturally grain-free
  • Free from preservatives and artificial ingredients
  • Easy to make with minimal ingredients
  • Great for dogs with sensitive stomachs
  • A crunchy alternative to processed treats

Because zucchini has a mild flavor, these treats are also a good option for dogs who enjoy lighter snacks between meals.

Ingredients

We have only used zucchini. You could lightly toss them in oil and dog friendly herbs before cooking but we wanted it plain and simple.

Two whole courgettes with dark green skin are placed on a white marble surface.

How To Make Zucchini Chips For Dogs

We made these in a dehydrator but if you don’t have one, they can be baked in the oven. We have provided instructions to make in the oven in the recipe card below.

Sliced courgette pieces arranged in a single layer on a wooden chopping board.

Thinly slice the zucchini.

Sliced courgette rounds on a wooden chopping board, partially covered with a sheet of white kitchen roll.

Blot the zucchini to remove excess moisture.

Sliced courgette rounds arranged on the rack of a food dehydrator, ready for drying.

Place the slices on dehydrator trays.

Sliced and dried courgette crisps are spread on a light grey surface, with two whole courgettes visible in the background.

Dehydrate at 125°F (52°C) for 6–10 hours

Recipe Tips

Slice evenly – Uniform slices help the zucchini dehydrate evenly. A mandoline slicer can make this easier.

Pat dry before cooking – Removing excess moisture helps the chips become crispier.

Make them crunchier – For extra crunchy chips, dehydrate a little longer until fully crisp.

Storage Instructions

Once your dehydrated zucchini chips for dogs have cooled completely, store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh and crunchy.

  • Room temperature: Store in a cool, dry place for up to 5–7 days
  • Refrigerator: Store for up to 2–3 weeks for longer freshness
  • Freezer: Freeze in a sealed bag or container for up to 3 months

Make sure there is no moisture left in the chips before storing, as any remaining dampness can cause mould to develop. If the chips soften over time, you can re-dehydrate or pop them back in a low oven for a short time to crisp them up again.
