Baked Blueberry Treats for Dogs

Spread the love

These easy baked blueberry treats for dogs have just 5 ingredients and are simple to make. A combination of banana, blueberries, rolled oats, egg and a cinnamon make a tasty dairy-free dog treat.

Our dogs loved these treats and they only take 15 minutes to bake, making them a quick dog treat to have to hand. Juicy blueberries pair great with the banana and the rolled oats hold the mixture together with no flour.

Can dogs eat rolled oats?

Dogs can eat rolled oats, and they can be a healthy addition to their diet when given in moderation. Rolled oats are a good source of fiber, which can aid in digestion, and they also contain essential nutrients like manganese, phosphorus, and magnesium. Oats are generally well-tolerated by most dogs and can be a suitable alternative to wheat-based treats for dogs with grain sensitivities.

Are rolled oats gluten-free?

No, rolled oats are not inherently gluten-free. Oats themselves do not contain gluten, but they are often processed in facilities that also handle gluten-containing grains like wheat, barley, and rye. As a result, cross-contamination can occur, leading to traces of gluten in commercially available oats.

If you’re looking to use oats in a gluten-free dog treat recipe, make sure to choose certified gluten-free oats to ensure they are safe for dogs with gluten sensitivities. Always read product labels and consider using ingredients that are explicitly labeled as gluten-free to avoid any potential issues.

Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

Ingredients

Just 5 simple ingredients make these blueberry dog treats.

blueberry treat ingredients
  • Blueberries – fresh is preferable. If using frozen blueberries, you can partially thaw them before incorporating them into the mixture. This can help release some of the juices and distribute the blueberry flavor more evenly.
  • Banana – Ripe bananas are sweeter and easier to mash, making them ideal for this recipe. The natural sweetness of the ripe bananas will add flavor to the treats without the need for additional sweeteners.
  • Egg – a great source of protein.
  • Rolled oats – old fashioned, not the quick-cooking type).
  • Cinnamon – a great anti-inflammatory spice.

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mash the banana with a fork.
  • Add the egg and continue to mash.
  • Add the rolled oats to the bowl and mix well until all the ingredients are combined. If the mixture seems a bit dry, you can add a little water, about a tablespoon at a time, until you achieve a dough-like consistency. If your banana is large and very moist, you may not need the extra water.
  • Add the blueberries and mix into the oat mixture, bursting them with a fork.
  • Take small portions of the mixture and roll them into balls. Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet and then gently flatten them with your fingers or the back of a spoon. You can also use a lightly floured rolling pin to roll out the dough and cut it into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
  • Bake the treats in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy. The baking time may vary depending on your oven and the thickness of the treats, so keep an eye on them to avoid overcooking
  • Once the treats are done, remove them from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack. They will become crunchier as they cool.
