Chicken Sardine Cat Treats

Spread the love

Treat your cat to these homemade Chicken Sardine Cat Treats. Combining protein-rich sardines with lean chicken and egg, these simple treats are packed with flavors that cats naturally love. The rich aroma of fish and meat makes them especially appealing, making them perfect for rewarding your feline friend or offering an occasional snack.

With only three ingredients, these treats are quick to prepare and our cats loved them. As they were baking I had a few sets of furry paws in and out of the kitchen. Whether you have a playful kitten or a discerning senior cat, these homemade treats are an easy way to add a little extra excitement to their day while providing a nutritious boost.

We also used these treats in the dog’s snuffle mats, so it’s a two for one recipe! If you make too many and have a dog, use them in a snuffle mat, part of a kong filler or a topper treat.

Can Cats Eat Ground Chicken?

As obligate carnivores, cats require animal-based protein as the foundation of their diet. Ground chicken provides high-quality protein that helps support muscle maintenance, energy levels, and overall health. It’s also generally easy to digest, making it a popular ingredient in both commercial and homemade cat foods.

When feeding ground chicken to cats:

  • Always cook it thoroughly to reduce the risk of harmful bacteria.
  • Use plain chicken without added salt, seasonings, onions, garlic, or other ingredients that can be toxic to cats.
  • Choose lean ground chicken when possible to avoid excessive fat.
  • Serve it as a treat or part of a balanced recipe rather than as a complete diet on its own.

Ingredients

Just 3 ingredients make these easy homemade cat treats.

An open tin of sardines in water, a measuring jug of cooked minced chicken, and a brown egg are arranged on a white surface—perfect ingredients for homemade chicken sardine cat treats.

Sardines in Water
Sardines are packed with high-quality protein and are naturally rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help support healthy skin, a shiny coat, and overall wellbeing. Their strong aroma also makes these treats especially appealing to cats. Choose sardines packed in water rather than oil, and avoid varieties with added salt or seasonings.

Cooked Lean Ground Chicken
Lean ground chicken provides an excellent source of easily digestible protein that helps maintain strong muscles and supports your cat’s natural carnivorous diet. Cooking the chicken before adding it to the recipe ensures the treats are safe and easy for cats to enjoy.

Egg
Egg acts as a natural binder, helping hold the treats together during baking. It also contributes additional protein, vitamins, and minerals, making these treats even more nutritious while creating a firm texture that is easy for cats to nibble.

How to Make Chicken Sardine Cat Treats

We made these in a silicone treat mold but you could simply drop small amounts of the mixture onto a prepared baking sheet and bake.

Cool and give as a treat.

  • Drain the sardines well before mixing to prevent the dough from becoming too wet.
  • Mash the sardines thoroughly so they blend evenly with the chicken and egg, creating a consistent texture throughout the treats.
  • Use plain cooked chicken without any seasoning, salt, onions, or garlic, as these ingredients are not suitable for cats.
  • If the mixture feels too wet to shape, chill it in the refrigerator for 15–20 minutes before forming the treats.
  • For a crunchier treat, leave the treats in the switched-off oven for 15–20 minutes after baking.

Storage Instructions

Once baked, allow the sardine and chicken cat treats to cool completely before storing. This helps prevent condensation, which can make the treats spoil more quickly.

Store the treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. Because they contain fresh meat, fish, and egg, they are best enjoyed within a short time frame.

For longer storage, you can freeze the treats in a sealed freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2–3 months. Separate layers with baking paper to stop them sticking together.

To serve from frozen, simply thaw a portion in the fridge overnight or allow them to come to room temperature before offering them to your cat. Always check for freshness before feeding.

Serving Suggestions

Feed these sardine and chicken cat treats in moderation as an occasional snack. Most adult cats can enjoy 1–3 small treats per day, depending on their size and overall diet, while smaller cats should have fewer. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your cat’s daily calorie intake, with the rest coming from a complete and balanced cat food. Always adjust portions based on your cat’s weight, activity level, and dietary needs.
