Is Chicken Liver Safe For Cats?

Yes, chicken liver is safe for cats when fed in moderation and prepared properly. In fact, itโ€™s a highly nutritious ingredient for cats, as it is rich in protein, essential amino acids, iron, and vitamins like A, B12, and D. These nutrients support your cat’s overall health, including their vision, immune system, and energy levels.

However, there are some important guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Moderation is key: Chicken liver is very high in vitamin A, and excessive consumption can lead to vitamin A toxicity over time. Treats made with chicken liver should only make up a small portion of your catโ€™s diet (about 5-10% of their total intake).
  • Cook it properly: Raw liver can carry harmful bacteria, so itโ€™s best to cook the chicken liver thoroughly before using it in recipes or feeding it to your cat.
  • Avoid seasoning: Cats should only eat plain, unseasoned chicken liver. Spices, salt or other additives can be harmful to them.

When given in appropriate amounts, chicken liver is a safe, tasty, and healthy addition to your cat’s treat routine!

Ingredients

Just 4 ingredients make these easy homemade cat treat.

Ingredients on a marble surface: raw chicken livers in a bowl, oat flour in a bowl, single egg, and dried catnip in a bowl.
  • Chicken livers provide a protein-rich, nutrient-packed base thatโ€™s full of flavor.
  • Catnip adds a dash of excitement, enticing your cat with its naturally appealing aroma.
  • Oat flour is a gentle, gluten-free binder that ensures a soft, chewy texture thatโ€™s easy to nibble. Making your own oat flour is easy as blending oats in a food processor.
  • An egg binds everything together while adding a boost of nutrition.

Recipe Tips

Bake the treats for about 15โ€“20 minutes, or until they are firm but not overly dry. Softer treats are easier for cats to eat.

If your cat is sensitive to catnip or not a fan, reduce the amount or leave it out entirely. The treats will still be tasty!

Oat Flour can be substituted with other cat friendly flours.

Storage

Store baked treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

For longer storage, freeze them in batches and thaw small amounts as needed. Frozen treats can last up to 3 months.

Treat Serving Size

The number of servings from this recipe depends on the size of the treats you make. Typically, if you shape the dough into small, bite-sized pieces suitable for cats (about ยฝ-inch squares), this recipe should yield 25โ€“30 treats.

For serving size:

  • Most cats can have 1โ€“2 small treats per day, depending on their size, weight, and overall diet. Treats should make up no more than 10% of their daily caloric intake.

So, this recipe could last one cat 1โ€“2 weeks when stored properly, or even longer if you freeze the extra treats!
