What Is a Pupcake?

Pupcakes are dog-friendly cupcakes made with safe, wholesome ingredients that fit into canine diets. Unlike regular cupcakes, they don’t contain sugar, chocolate, or artificial sweeteners. Instead, they’re built with dog-safe staples like pumpkin, peanut butter, oats, applesauce, carrots, and eggs. They’re baked just like a normal cupcake, but gentle on your dog’s stomach while still tasting delicious. ๐Ÿง๐Ÿพ

Pupcakes are perfect for celebrating your dog’s birthday, gotcha day, or as an occasional special treat-and they’re often topped with a frosting made from Greek yogurt, peanut butter, or mashed banana for that extra paw-some finish!

Why Your Dog Will Love This Recipe

My dogs went crazy for these treats and I suspect that it was the peanut yogurt topping as they all tried to eat it whole. You will see by the video of how to make it, that my dogs have no manners when it comes to pupcakes!

Ingredients

Just a few ingredients to make these tasty pupcakes. As with all our baking of dogs desserts, we do not use any baking powder or soda as it’s not dog friendly. Even with a small amount, we don’t want to give it to our dogs. This yields a heavier cake which is perfect for chewing.

Labeled ingredients for pumpkin pupcakes on a white surface: oat flour, pumpkin puree, applesauce, egg, olive oil, and grated carrot, with small pumpkins in the background.
  • Pumpkin puree โ€“ Rich in fiber and beta-carotene, pumpkin supports healthy digestion and adds natural sweetness. If you are using canned pumpkin puree, ensure that it is plain and not pumpkin pie filling which has toxic spices for dogs.
  • Grated carrot โ€“ A crunchy, vitamin-packed veggie that promotes good vision and adds a touch of natural sweetness.
  • Oat flour โ€“ A gentle, gluten-free flour thatโ€™s easy on your dogโ€™s stomach and provides slow-releasing energy. This can be substituted with other dog friendly flours.
  • Apple sauce โ€“ Adds natural sweetness and moisture, plus a boost of vitamins and antioxidants. We make our own sugar free apple sauce. It’s quick and easy!
  • Egg โ€“ A high-quality source of protein and essential amino acids to support strong muscles.
  • Olive Oil โ€“ Adds healthy fats to keep the pupcakes soft and support a shiny coat. Coconut oil could be substituted.
  • Greek yogurt (for frosting) โ€“ Packed with protein and probiotics for digestive health. Use plain, low fat and unsweetend.
  • Peanut butter (for frosting) โ€“ A tasty treat full of healthy fats and protein, loved by almost every dog! Use natural and unsweetened peanut butter.

Recipe Tips

  • Check the consistency โ€“ The batter should be thick but scoopable. If itโ€™s too dry, add a little extra apple sauce or a splash of water; if too wet, add a bit more oat flour.
  • Use fresh ingredients โ€“ Fresh pumpkin puree and grated carrots give the best flavor and texture.
  • Cupcake liners โ€“ Using liners makes it easy to remove pupcakes from the pan and keeps cleanup simple.
  • Cool completely before frosting โ€“ Frosting warm pupcakes can cause it to melt, so let them cool completely before adding the Greek yogurt and peanut butter topping.
  • Portion control โ€“ These are treats, so serve in moderation according to your dogโ€™s size and dietary needs.
  • Optional extras โ€“ You can add a pinch of cinnamon or a few dog-safe berries for extra flavor and fun.

Storage and Freezing Instructions

  • Short-term storage: Keep unfrosted pupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. If frosted, store them in the fridge for up to 4 days to keep the yogurt and peanut butter topping fresh.
  • Freezing: Pupcakes freeze beautifully! Wrap each pupcake individually in plastic wrap or place them in an airtight freezer bag. They can be frozen for up to 2 months.
  • Thawing: To serve, simply thaw in the fridge for a few hours or at room temperature for about 30โ€“60 minutes. Avoid microwaving, as it can alter the texture and frosting.
  • Tip: Frost only the pupcakes you plan to serve soon. Keep the rest frozen unfrosted and add frosting after thawing for the best taste and texture.
