Is Chicken Liver Good For Dogs?
Chicken liver can be a good treat for dogs, as long as you feed it in moderation. It’s rich in protein, iron, and vitamins A and B, which makes it nutritious and tasty. Because it’s so rich, liver should only make up about 5-10% of a dog’s diet, and it’s best served cooked and in small portions.

Ingredients
We added sweet potato and herbs for additional flavor and texture, but these can be omitted. We have a few variation suggestions underneath if you are feeling creative.

Chicken livers
A nutrient-dense protein source for dogs, rich in iron, vitamin A, B vitamins, and essential amino acids. They bring a deep, meaty flavour and a smooth texture to the pâté, making it especially appealing to dogs.
Mashed sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes provide natural fibre, vitamins, and slow-release carbohydrates. They help balance the richness of the liver while adding gentle sweetness and a creamy consistency to the pâté.
Rosemary
Adds a subtle, aromatic flavour and contains natural antioxidants. In small amounts, it can support digestion and help enhance the overall taste of the recipe without overpowering it.
Parsley
A fresh, mild herb that can help support digestion and freshen breath. It adds a light herbal note and complements the richness of the chicken livers.
Greek yogurt (optional)
Greek yogurt adds extra creaminess and a slight tang to the pâté. It can also provide beneficial probiotics to support gut health. This ingredient is optional and best used plain and unsweetened.
How To Make Chicken Liver Pate For Dogs
This is an easy recipe to make. Cooked chicken livers are blended in a food processor with the other ingredients to make a liver paste. Cool and serve!

Cook the chicken livers in a saucepan with water.

Add the cooked chicken livers with the other ingredients in a food processor.

Spoon some of the cooked liver water for a smooth paste.

Blend until you have a paste texture.
Recipe Tips
- Trim any visible fat or connective tissue from the livers for a smoother, less bitter pâté.
- Let the livers and cool slightly as blending hot ingredients can create a watery texture.
- Stop the food processor occasionally to scrape down the sides for a perfectly smooth mixture.
- If the pâté is too thick, add a little of the cooked liver water or Greek yogurt slowly until you reach the desired consistency.
- For spreading on kibble or using as a topper, keep it slightly softer; for stuffing toys or freezing, make it a bit thicker.

Variation Suggestions
These variations let you mix up flavors, textures and serving styles while keeping it safe and nutritious for your dog.
- Turkey Liver Pâté: Swap chicken livers for turkey livers for a milder flavor with similar nutritional benefits.
- Vegetable Boost: Add a small amount of cooked carrots, or pumpkin to increase fiber and nutrients.
- Herb Twist: Use dog-safe herbs like a pinch of thyme or basil-either in place of rosemary and parsley or in addition to them.
- Creamy Yogurt Version: Add a bit more Greek yogurt for a richer, creamier texture that dogs love.
- Frozen Treats: Pour the pâté into silicone molds or ice cube trays and freeze for a fun, long-lasting treat.
- Kibble Topper: Thin the pâté slightly with warm water or broth and drizzle over dry food for an irresistible meal enhancement.
Storage Tips
Refrigeration: Store the pâté in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Always keep it covered to maintain freshness.
Freezing: Portion the pâté into ice cube trays or small silicone molds and freeze. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to a freezer-safe bag or container. Frozen pâté can last up to 2–3 months.
Thawing: Thaw frozen portions in the fridge overnight before serving. Avoid microwaving, as it can overcook the liver and change the texture.
Serving tips: Use small portions for treats, food toppers, or enrichment toys. Only take out what your dog will eat in one sitting to keep the rest fresh.
Labeling: Always label containers or bags with the date to ensure freshness and safety.
