Dog Sweet Potato Cake

Spread the love

If you’re planning a special treat for your furry best friend, bake dog sweet potato cake. They’re packed with natural sweetness from apples and nourishing vitamins from sweet potatoes-a healthier alternative to store-bought dog cakes.

Topped with a creamy sweet potato frosting, these pupcakes don’t just taste amazing to dogs-they look adorable too, making them perfect for birthdays, holidays or just showing your pup a little extra love. I baked them for Teddy’s 9th birthday and he devoured them in record time!

Five cupcakes with orange frosting, each topped with a small bone-shaped biscuit, are arranged on a light surface with an apple and kitchen towel in the background.

Ingredients

This is all you need to make dog sweet potato cake. As with all our baked goods for dogs, we do not use baking powder or baking soda as it’s not safe for dogs. It means the cakes do not rise as much but the dog’s don’t care.

Six labeled ingredients on a white surface: sweet potato puree, applesauce, oat flour, eggs, Greek yogurt, and coconut oil.
  • Sweet Potato – Naturally sweet, rich in fiber, and full of vitamins A and C to support your dog’s immune system and vision. It’s also the base of the frosting for a delicious, creamy finish. We make our own sweet potato puree which is basically mashed sweet potato!
  • Applesauce – Adds moisture and natural sweetness without sugar. Apples are a good source of vitamins and antioxidants that pups love.
  • Oat Flour – Provides structure to the cupcakes while adding fiber. Oat flour is a gentle, gluten-free option for sensitive stomachs. This can be substituted with other dog friendly flour.
  • Eggs – A fantastic protein source that helps bind the batter together and adds fluffiness.
  • Coconut Oil – Adds healthy fats for a shiny coat and supports skin health.
  • Greek Yogurt (in the frosting) – Unsweetened yogurt adds creaminess and probiotics that can aid digestion.

How to Make Dog Sweet Potato Cake

We baked these in muffin liners for a smaller cake but you could use a springform cake tin. Don’t judge my lack of frosting piping! We have just moved and I am without a piping bag! Not that the dogs complained though.

Recipe Tips

  • Cool before frosting – Let the cupcakes cool completely, otherwise the sweet potato topping will slide or melt.
  • Use a piping bag for a fun finish – A star tip will give your pupcakes that bakery-style swirl.
  • Make them bite-sized – Use a mini muffin tin if you want smaller, portion-controlled treats.
  • Customize the garnish – Top with a blueberry, apple slice, or mini dog biscuit for extra flair.
  • Topping – If youโ€™d like to prep ahead, make the frosting separately and store it in the fridge for 2โ€“3 days. Pipe onto cupcakes just before serving for the freshest look.
  • Serving Tip – Always serve the cakes at room temperature (not straight from the fridge) so the texture is soft and enjoyable for your pup.

Storage Tips

Refrigerator: Keep frosted pupcakes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Freezer: Store unfrosted cupcakes in a sealed container or freezer bag for up to 2 months. Simply thaw in the fridge overnight before frosting and serving.
