Can Dogs Eat Pumpkin Pie?

Your homemade or store bought pumpkin pie is NOT a good choice for your dog as it may contain ingredients that are not suitable for them. The pastry may contain sugar or baking powder and will be high in fat. The pumpkin pie filling may also contain sugar and unsuitable spices.

Canned pumpkin pie filling is not suitable for dogs as it may contain nutmeg which is toxic to dogs. Plain pumpkin puree is a better option and as ever, you can’t beat homemade!

Ingredients

We make a dog friendly pastry with brown rice flour, apple sauce and egg. It may seem tasteless to us but it’s low in fat and designed for dogs, not humans!

Dog Friendly Pie Crust

Brown Rice Flour – Gluten-free and gentle on sensitive stomachs. An easily digestible source of carbohydrates that creates a light, crisp crust

🐾 Substitution: Use oat flour or coconut flour (reduce amount slightly for coconut flour, as it’s more absorbent)

Egg – Binds ingredients together for structure. Provides protein and healthy fats and is rich in vitamins like B12 and riboflavin

🐾 Substitution: For egg-sensitive dogs, replace with 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed + 3 tablespoons water (flax “egg”)

Unsweetened Applesauce – Adds moisture and mild sweetness. Helps bind the crust without added fats. Contains fiber, vitamins A and C, and antioxidants

🐾 Substitution: Use mashed banana or pumpkin puree for a similar texture and flavor

Pumpkin Pie Filling For Dogs

Pumpkin Puree – Creamy, naturally sweet filling base. Rich in fiber, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and C. Supports digestion and a healthy immune system. Do NOT use canned pumpkin pie filling as that contains spices unsuitable for dogs. Try homemade pumpkin puree if you cannot get canned.

🐾 Substitution: Use sweet potato puree or butternut squash puree for variety

Egg – Helps the filling set and adds structure. Boosts protein and nutrient content

🐾 Substitution: Same as above – flaxseed egg for sensitive pups

Cinnamon – Adds warm, cozy flavor. Contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Aids blood sugar regulation. Use a small amount.

🐾 Substitution: Optional – you can use a pinch of ginger or turmeric for an anti-inflammatory boost

⚠️ Avoid nutmeg – it’s toxic to dogs

Optional Pie Topping

Greek Natural Yogurt – Creamy, tangy topping that mimics whipped cream. Contains probiotics for gut health. Excellent source of calcium and protein

🐾 Substitution: Goat’s milk yogurt – gentler on digestion. Coconut yogurt – dairy-free option for sensitive dogs (unsweetened only)

How to Make Pumpkin Pies For Dogs

We made mini pumpkin pies for dogs because they were easier to give as a dog treat rather than a slice of pie. A silicone muffin case was used with the pies being easier to pop out when cool.
