Are Cranberries Good For Cats?

Cranberries can be safe and even beneficial for cats in small amounts โ€” but only when prepared properly and offered in moderation.

โœ… Potential Benefits

  • Urinary tract support: Cranberries contain compounds that may help prevent certain bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract wall. While theyโ€™re not a cure for UTIs, they can offer mild support.
  • Rich in antioxidants: They provide vitamins and antioxidants that can support overall health.
  • Low in sugar (when fresh): Fresh cranberries are far healthier than sweetened dried varieties.

โš ๏ธ Important Notes

  • Cats are obligate carnivores, so cranberries should be a tiny supplement โ€” not a main ingredient.
  • Avoid sweetened cranberries (like most dried cranberries), cranberry sauce, or anything with added sugar or artificial sweeteners.
  • Introduce gradually to ensure your cat tolerates them well.

๐Ÿ‘ When Are Cranberries Good?

Fresh or unsweetened cranberries, finely chopped or pureed, can be added in very small amounts to homemade cat treats or food. Theyโ€™re generally safe but should be used sparingly.

Why Your Cat Will Love This Recipe

Bold claims indeed as one of my cats looked at me in disgust because these were not his favorite Dreamies flavor! However, some cats may love this homemade cat treat recipe because they are made with flavors and textures that cats naturally enjoy. Lean ground turkey provides the meaty, high-protein goodness cats crave, while the egg adds richness and a soft texture thatโ€™s easy for them to chew. The finely chopped cranberries offer just a hint of tartness without overpowering the savory taste, making each bite both interesting and enticing.

Ingredients

Just 4 ingredients make this easy homemade cat treat recipe.

Four labeled ingredients on a marble surface: a bowl of lean ground turkey, a whole egg, several cranberries, and a bowl of oat flour.

Lean Ground Turkey
A high-quality, easily digestible protein source that supports your catโ€™s muscles and overall health. Using lean turkey keeps the treats nutritious while avoiding excess fat.

Cranberries (finely chopped)
Just a few fresh cranberries add natural antioxidants and mild urinary tract support. Chopping them finely ensures your cat can safely enjoy the benefits without overwhelming the flavour.

Egg
Acts as a natural binder while supplying additional protein, vitamins, and healthy fats. Eggs help give the treats structure and a soft, cat-friendly texture.

Oat Flour
A gentle, gluten-free flour that helps hold the mixture together. Oat flour is mild on sensitive stomachs and adds a bit of fibre to support healthy digestion.

How To Make Turkey And Cranberry Cat Treats

This is an easy recipe made in a food processor but with a firm hand and very finely chopped cranberries you could make this in a mixing bowl.

We use a silicone cat treat mold for the shapes but you could make them without these. Just add small dots of the cat treats onto a baking sheet instead.

Recipe Tips

Chop the cranberries very finely to ensure they mix evenly and donโ€™t create large tart pockets your cat may avoid.

Donโ€™t overbake โ€” cats generally prefer softer treats. Remove them from the oven as soon as theyโ€™re firm but still tender.

Adjust the texture if needed: If the mixture feels too wet, add a little more oat flour; if too dry, add a tiny splash of water or broth.

Make small, bite-sized pieces suitable for your catโ€™s mouth to avoid crumbling and waste.

Variations

Chicken Instead of Turkey: Swap lean ground turkey for ground chicken for cats who prefer a milder flavor.

Add a Tiny Pinch of Catnip: For a fun twist, mix in a little dried catnip to make the treats extra irresistible.

Pumpkin Boost: Add 1โ€“2 teaspoons of plain pumpkin purรฉe for extra fibre and digestion support.

Herb-Friendly Version: A tiny pinch of dried parsley can add a mild flavour and extra nutrients โ€” safe in very small quantities.

Swap the Cranberries: Use fresh blueberries in place of the cranberries.

Storage Instructions

Store these treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4โ€“5 days.
For longer storage, freeze them for up to 2 months and thaw a few at a time in the fridge before serving. Because they contain fresh turkey and egg, do not leave them out at room temperature for long periods.
